Democrat Phil Murphy will be the next governor of New Jersey.
Amid all the drama on Tuesday night, Democrats racked up a major victory in New Jersey.
Democrat Phil Murphy, a businessman and diplomat, defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno to become the next governor of New Jersey.
Murphy will succeed Chris Christie, the pro-Trump bullying firebrand who has essentially trashed the state’s entire Republican Party. Between his aides shutting down a bridge to extort a mayor who did not endorse him, trashing his state’s mass transit system, and lounging around on a closed public beach during a government shutdown, Christie is leaving office as the least popular governor in America — with one poll in July giving him a 15 percent approval rating.
The election in New Jersey is not just a repudiation of Christie, but also of Donald Trump. Guadagno ran a Trump-like campaign that stoked racial resentment of immigrants.
It backfired spectacularly.
Murphy’s victory is especially timely because there is a strong likelihood the next governor will be making an appointment to the Senate. A GOP win could have increased Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s margin to pass a right-wing tax giveaway to the rich. This election ensures the seat will remain in Democratic hands.
As Democrats already control the New Jersey state legislature, winning the governorship turns New Jersey into a blue trifecta.
Murphy’s win is a clear, indisputable win for those resisting Trump’s agenda — and a validation of their efforts.
