After a year of inexcusable and unprecedented obstruction of President Obama's nominee to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat, Republicans have done the unthinkable — and they will come to regret it.
On the very same day that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, Republicans declared they would block any nominee President Obama named to take his place — and for a better part of a year, they did just that. They even said they would block any nominee by Hillary Clinton, if she were to win the presidency.
In other words, they were going to steal the Supreme Court seat. Period.
Now, in order to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch, whose extremist record and abominable behavior during his confirmation process has made it impossible for him to receive enough votes under current Senate rules, Republicans have launched the “nuclear option” to end the the filibuster and sneak Gorsuch onto the bench despite widespread opposition to him.
Watch the moment Republicans officially pulled the trigger:

Democrats were almost unanimous in their opposition to Gorsuch. They listened to the outcry from their base and from a growing number of Americans who are deeply concerned about a lifetime appointment by a president under multiple ongoing investigations for possibly colluding with a foreign enemy. As Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) powerfully stated in her floor speech against Gorsuch:
I think it is crazy that we are considering confirming a lifetime Trump nominee to the Supreme Court at a moment when the president’s campaign is under the cloud of an active, ongoing FBI counterintelligence investigation that could result in indictments and appeals that will go all the way to the Supreme Court so that Trump’s nominee could be the deciding vote on whether Trump or his supporters broke the law and will be held accountable. That is nuts, and I believe we should tap the brakes on any nominee until this investigation is concluded.
Republicans will likely succeed in their unforgivable scheme to steal a Supreme Court seat, but as they and their president’s popularity continues to plummet, even with the very voters who most strongly supported them, they should be worried. Very worried.
The resistance is growing louder and stronger every day, and if Republicans do not change course, there will be a high price to pay come Election Day in 2018.
